Annual Report 2002/03Pharmacy and Drug Information SectionGoal 1: Professional Development The Pharmacy and Drug Information Section organized the 2002 EMBASE lecture at the annual meeting in Dallas, Texas. Loyd Allen, Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding and Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, spoke on the topic "Contemporary Pharmaceutical Compounding." EMBASE sponsors this lecture annually. The honorarium for the speaker was raised from $500. to $1000. Dr. Robert Naso, the Senior Vice President for Quality, Regulatory and Product Development at Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, has agreed to deliver the 2003 EMBASE lecture at MLA '03 in San Diego. . Dr. Naso will speak on the development of a vaccine to prevent and treat nicotine addiction. PDI is also cosponsoring a session called Through Tempests and Storms: Vaccines, Biologicals, Patient Education and Environmental Health. The primary sponsor is the Consumer and Patient Health Information Section. Two issues of PDI Alert, the section's newsletter, were published. Articles that could aid in professional growth of Pharmacy librarians included a description of the link out project at the National Library of Medicine and a summary of the EBBASE lecture on pharmaceutical compounding. Goal 2: Advocacy At the suggestion of the PDI section chair, the chair elect of the Pharmaceutical and Health Technology Division (PHTD) of the Special Library Association posted a message on the Pharmacy-Lib email list announcing the PHTD sections program at the annual meeting in New York. The Special Library Association Biomedical and Life Sciences Division invited submissions for its annual contributed papers session at the New York conference of the Special Library Association and posted the program at on the Pharmacy-Lib email list. Librarians at the new Pharmacy schools of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Hampton University and the Nevada College of Pharmacy have been contacted about joining both the Medical Library Association and the Pharmacy and Drug Information Section. Goal 3: Organization The Pharmacy -Lib email list had a message encouraging all members to contribute to the section's newsletter and to suggest programming ideas for the annual meeting. The bylaws chair has updated and submitted the section's bylaws so they comply with MLA's bylaws. An official vote for approval of the bylaws will be conducted at the section's upcoming annual business meeting. Elections were held for two positions. Virginia Stone is the chair elect for 2003/2004 and Penny Coppernoll-Blach is the potential candidate for the MLA Nominating Committee. Sarah McCord, section chair for 2003/2004 has prepared a manual for future chair elects that should assist them in understand the planning process for the annual meeting. The chair has identified several people who may be interested in serving as future officers of the section. Goal 6: Information Technology The PowerPoint presentation of the EMBASE lecture "Contemporary Pharmaceutical Compounding" is now on the PDI Website. The sections Web editor will post all future EMBASE lectures on the Website. The PDI sections Web page now has the sections bylaws. There has been one change to the email list of Pharmacy librarians "Pharm-Lib". Because of spamming that has occurred only people who subscribe to the email list may post messages.
