Since the release of the Institute of Medicine's report,
To Err Is Human, many hospitals in the United States and professional
communities in health care have created distinct roles and initiatives
to effectively apply their expertise to reduce errors in medicine. A defined
role in patient safety for information professionals is necessary for
health care communities to realize the possibilities of working proactively
with this professional group. Improvements in safety can be gained by
applying distinct information management competencies. New ways of applying
these competencies and measuring improvements based on these applications
can help document the impact that reliable information and knowledge processes
can have on the safety of care. This symposium provides health sciences
librarians the opportunity to interact with other health care professionals
and consumers in defining the role of the librarian in patient safety.
