MLA '09: You're Invited! The 2009 National Program Committee extends a warm welcome and invites you to attend MLA ‘09 “iFusions” in Honolulu, Hawaii, May 15–20, 2009. From the moment your fl ight arrives, you will be energized by the floral air, cool sea breezes, and charm and sincerity of Hawaii’s people and “aloha spirit.” iFusions is an opportunity to explore new trends and paradigms, transporting you to unimagined and unparalleled “I”nformation, “I”ndividual, and “I”nnovative fusions. You will discover how to meet the challenges you encounter every day in a myriad of health information settings, from hospital libraries to clinical rounds to online portals or academic environs. Whether you are exploring issues such as work-life balance, environmental challenges, the impact of social networking, international programs, disaster planning, scholarly communication, space preservation or planning, curricular design, or strategic initiatives, MLA ’09 promises to have speakers, panel discussions, exhibits, and posters to meet your needs. Our keynote speaker and McGovern lecturer will be Adam Bosworth, a name you may recognize from his association with Google Health. Bosworth is known as one of the pioneers of extensible markup language (XML) technology and previously worked for Microsoft and other hightech companies. One of his blog entries evokes an image of what we can expect him to address. “I spent the first 25 years of my life building Lego blocks for adults and intend to spend the next 25 years trying to help people live healthier lives and live longer by working with the health community to help out where I can.” New annual meeting features include international posters; “speed updating” presentations on the latest services and products; a free continuing education course, Librarians without Borders, with a segment on the “Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI)/Internet Resources for Health Information Professionals”; and two video webcasts: “History of Hawaiian Health Care” by Benjamin Young and a session on health and wellness presented by Terry Shintani. The Local Assistance Committee has created a terrific wiki (www.mla09.wetpaint.com) that provides everything you will need to know about activities, arts and culture, restaurants, and general information. Our meeting hotel, the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa, offers the perfect mix of exceptional hotel accommodations and classic Hawaiian hospitality. Imagine gardens, waterfalls, wildlife, and the beach at your front door. Aloha is so much more than a greeting or salutation—come see what it’s all about!
