CORE Scenario

To top of page As an instructor,

I want to update (or develop) the content, exercises and resources for a course on evidence-based medicine. I want to find knowledge objects that would help me with my content and teaching. These could include:

  • Examples of curriculum (EBM, Informatics for Medical Students)
  • Examples of handouts, quick guides - (teaching PubMed)
  • Tutorials to share with students (EBM)
  • Examples of course evaluation forms
  • Examples of scenarios to use as class examples
  • Graphics - picture of the evidence pyramid, a forest-plot, etc.
  • Best way to explain concepts, such as "odds ratios' or "likelihood ratios"

I want to find materials that I could use in class without alteration (attribution required; no derivative works), alter to meet my specific course needs (Attribution required; allows modification; share alike), and direct my students to use independently of the course. I spent considerable time searching on Google for teaching materials. It was frustrating because many of the links were not productive and the quality of the material was questionable. My search could have been more productive if I had access to a CORE Toolbox.

What makes the CORE Toolkbox different from a Google search is that the authors have purposely placed their best materials in the "CORE domain" so that they can be used or shared by the membership and that the conditions of use are implied in the record. CORE would also provide me with a course management platform that would provide a framework for organizing and delivering the course across the Web.

To top of page As a learner,

I want to know more about metadata. I first want to find a basic article or module that introduces the concepts and gives me some background materials. Then I might want to pursue a course in more detail. The course could be an online tutorial. But I would also be interested in a face-to-face course, if one was available in my region. And finally, I would also want to find several "experts" or mentors who might be able to answer questions related to a specific project. The CORE Toolbox would link me to learning modules, CE courses and experts to help with my project. CORE would also help me track my Academy status and recertification requirements.

To top of page As a new recruit to medical libraries,

I want to improve my knowledge base and skills in consumer health information, with the goal of finding a job as a consumer health librarian. I would want to know if there are any consumer health information certification programs, what courses might constitute an effective curriculum for consumer health information and who would be the best health information professional to take to about career opportunities. CORE would help me identify certification programs, plan a curriculum of CE and academic courses, and find mentors to help guide my career.
