Re-Introducing NNLM’s New and Improved Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) On-Demand Class

The Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) announces the new and improved Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) On-Demand course.

About CHIS On-Demand

Discover the basics of providing consumer health information through eight independent learning modules. Earn up to eight hours credit towards a Consumer Health Information Specialization. Each module takes about an hour to complete. Modules cover: Know the Community, Know the Health Consumer, Knowledge of Subject Matter and Resources, Evaluation of Health Information, Reference and Instruction, Literacy and Health Literacy, Technology and Health, Ethics and Legal Issues.

The CHIS On-Demand class has three new modules qualifying for a CHIS level 2. The new modules include:

  • C6: Literacy and Health Literacy
    • This module is provided as a separate NNLM class. Learners can register and complete the 1 hour NNLM tutorial Health Literacy On-Demand for CHIS Level 2 credit. This class also qualifies for continuing education towards NCHEC Certified Health Educator Specialist (CHES©) and Certified Nurse Educator credit (CNE).
  • C7: Technology and Health
    • This module explores technology trends such as the benefits & challenges of health smartphone apps, the transformative and disruptive potential of artificial intelligence in health information and healthcare delivery, and current technology trends in healthcare and consumer health such as genetic testing, digital divide and health, and personal health records (PHRs) and electronic health records. Content is delivered through a reading and quiz and takes about an hour to complete.
  • C8: Ethics and Legal Issues
    • This module delves into ethical and legal issues of providing consumer health information. It identifies various library association code of ethics and additional professional guidance tools, discusses the importance of ethical principles in guiding our work as health information professionals, and differentiates between providing quality health information versus providing health care advice. Content is delivered through readings, case studies and a quiz and takes about an hour to complete.
