Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Peer Review: For Reviewers and Authors

This webinar aims to empower health sciences librarians to perform excellent peer reviews and write articles that pass peer review. You will learn about the Journal of the Medical Library Association’s (JMLA’s) peer review process, the importance of peer reviewers to research in our field, and ways to find your strengths as a peer reviewer and an author.

  • Describe JMLA’s peer review process 
  • Recognize the important role of JMLA peer reviewers
  • Differentiate strong and weak peer review comments
  • Construct excellent peer review comments according to JMLA guidelines

Audience: 

This webinar is designed for librarians at all experience levels. No knowledge of peer review is required to attend. Anyone interested in learning about the peer review process and/or improving their peer review skills is recommended to attend.

Presenters

Jill Barr-Walker, MS, MPH is an Assistant Editor of the Journal of the Medical Library Association and has won several awards for her publications, which include over 20 peer-reviewed articles. Jill is a Clinical Librarian at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, part of the University of California, San Francisco. She previously worked as a public health researcher where she received real-world training in how not to peer review articles.

Katherine Akers, PhD, MLIS is the Editor of the Journal of the Medical Library Association, has served as a peer reviewer for several journals in medicine and library and information sciences, has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles, and is on the New England Journal of Medicine Library Advisory Board. She is a Biomedical Research and Data Specialist at the Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where she specializes in supporting scholarly publishing and research data management as well as collaborating with faculty members on systematic reviews. She previously worked as a behavioral neuroscience researcher.
