Research Data Management Librarian Academy (RDMLA) Unit 1, Foundations of RDM

Nowadays, it’s a truism: data is an integral part of research. So what are the roles of librarians and libraries in our modern, data-rich research landscape? This unit begins to answer that question by providing an introduction for information professionals to the field of research data management. Here we present key concepts in research data management, including the research and data life cycles. For each stage of the data life cycle, we provide a broad overview of common data practices of researchers, as well as strategies information professionals employ to provide data services. This unit sets the foundation for the Research Data Management Librarian Academy (RDMLA).

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • List, order, and describe the stages in the DataOne data life cycle
  • Identify the information professional’s role in each stage of the data life cycle.
  • Evaluate research workflows in terms of the data life cycle and the information professionals’ role.
