The MLA Guide to Instructional Design Basics takes you through the process of creating a single-session learning event. As you take on the challenge of solving a problem faced by a group of students and faculty, you’ll gain or reinforce skills in creating a learning session, from identifying a need for instruction to developing learning outcomes to evaluating the effectiveness of a session.
The course includes:
- A realistic scenario that you engage to develop and practice instructional design skills
- A guide to implementing core design elements
- Resources for additional learning
- Pre and post self-assessments of your instructional design skills
This course is an approved elective for the Level I Data Services Specialization.
Learning Outcomes
When you complete the course you will be able to design an instructional event. You’ll be able to:
- Identify the need for instruction
- Design an instructional event, including identifying learning outcomes, outlining the event, and writing content
- Develop hand-outs and other materials
- Deliver an event
- Evaluate the event to determine its effectiveness

Any librarian or other health information professional, novice or veteran, who wants to develop core marketing and strategic communication skills.

Subject Matter Expert
Jessica Sender (MLS, MET, AHIP) is the librarian for the College of Nursing and for the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University. She works with faculty, staff, and students at all levels to design and deliver effective instruction experiences. She has taught continuing education courses on information literacy and instructional effectiveness. She has presented and written on a variety of instructional topics, including incorporating the ACRL Framework into discipline-specific instruction, instruction for adult learners, and the intersection of instruction and instructional technology.
