Social media are an increasingly popular source of health data. Regulatory frameworks for using these data and standards for legal documentation and ethical practice are, unfortunately, absent or ambiguous. If you work with data or support researchers who do, this webinar will prepare you to fill in this gap. It will empower you to fully and critically engage with the ethical and legal considerations surrounding the use of social media data in health research and to advise researchers on the use of social media data.
You’ll learn about the latest trends in data ethics and regulation and current ethical and legal issues related to social media data in health research. You’ll be able to locate and identify examples of ethical social media data use for research guidance and peer-review reference and use these examples in teaching and nurturing critical thought about ever-appearing new methods of social media data extraction and analysis.
You’ll leave the webinar with a reproducible, modular, and effective process for examining a social media research project and with the skills to make and facilitate making informed decisions on how to best respect the privacy of owners, accommodate the interests of researchers, and address the concerns of institutions when working with social media data.

Presenter
Jordan Wrigley is a Data Librarian with the Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship (CRDDS), University of Colorado – Boulder. She is the author or co-author of a number of articles on data-related topics. She consults with researchers who use social media and other research data and with industry and research organizations on data and meta-analytic topics. She is also a peer-reviewer for nursing environmental health journals on data and systematic review and meta-analytic methods.
