The Research and Education Librarian for the Health Sciences provides reference, instruction, and outreach activities as a member of a team that serves the Yale Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health, Yale New Haven Health System, and the broader Medical Campus. This position supports the research, teaching, clinical, and service missions of the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library. After appropriate training, the librarian will teach in the medical library's general instruction program and offer reference services to the general clientele of the medical center. Working closely with a supportive team of librarians, this user-centered individual will teach students, faculty, clinicians, and researchers to leverage information and data resources, conduct evidence-based searching and synthesis, and utilize and support citation management tools. The librarian will develop knowledge in specialized areas of librarianship which could include bibliometrics and data visualization, principles of open science and scholarly publishing, or explorations of emerging technologies. The librarian will be a member of the Academic Research and Education team, and report to the Head of that unit, while working collaboratively across the library.

The librarian will participate in project-based work across several domains that balance the candidate's individual goals and interests with the library's needs and with a goal of presenting key projects at conferences or through publication. In addition, the librarian’s professional interests will be supported with a mentoring program, professional development opportunities, and participation on library committees.

Job Description

Essential Duties:

  1. Collaborates on projects with colleagues on the Academic Research and Education Team who support students and faculty at the Yale Schools of Medicine Public Health, and Nursing, colleagues from the Clinical Research and Education Team who support the patient care, research and education needs of clinicians at Yale New Haven Hospital, and colleagues from the Technology and Innovation Team who provide data, informatics, web, and technical support across the medical campus.
  2. Provides reference, information, citation management, research, and consultation services for students and researchers throughout the research life cycle.
  3. Participates in the medical library's general instruction program and prepares and presents a range of classes on various topics, which could include biomedical databases and platforms, open science and other scholarly publication trends, citation management tools, biomedical research strategies, enhancing research impact, and citation analysis. Classes may be held in the library or other campus locations and/or online.
  4. Works on projects related to scholarly communication, open access, and publishing. Helps promote new publishing models to diverse user groups.
  5. Creates and maintains online guides and other research support tools for emerging areas of interest.
  6. Participates in departmental, library, and system-wide planning, and engages in campus, regional and national professional organizations, and collaborative activities. 
  7. May serve as a project manager for short-term projects.
  8. Serves on departmental committees.
  9. Demonstrates professional development and service through publication and/or active membership in professional organizations.
  10. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts.
  11. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Master’s degree from an ALA‐accredited library school. In selected instances, a graduate degree in a related discipline may be substituted for a master’s degree in library science.2. Experience working collegially, collaboratively and independently with varied groups with and across a complex organization, and a rapidly changing team environment.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

  1. Experience in a health sciences library or health care setting or transferable experience with information retrieval and management.
  2. Understanding of issues in open science.
  3. Experience supporting DEI initiatives in a library or other settings.
Salary Information

The salary range for this position is $67,000 - $77,000.

Background Check Requirements:
